Speaking for three hours, Eric Gold showed students and interested members of the
Pittsburgh film community trailers from his clients movies Narc, Bruce
Almighty, Old School, and Pixar's Finding Nemo. Along with
childhood friend and respected actor Marty Schiff, Eric shared how he had gone to
hanging out at Pittsburgh's Holiday House where his mother Thelma Landay worked
to selling microwaves in Los Angeles as a struggling stand-up/agent trainee to
guiding the careers of some of the most talented performers of his generation
(Vince Vaughn, Ellen DeGeneres, The Wayans Brothers, Jim Carrey, Will Farrell to
name a few.) Eric inspired the audience by talking about how he has always been
attracted to self-generating performers and that creative artists must take
responsibility for their own careers. Showing the recent super bowl ad of
Terrible Terry Tate: Office Linebacker made by a recent film school graduate on
digital video, Eric told about how that young filmmaker is now in the position to
direct a feature. He also talked about how to get internships and he and Marty
gave advice about developing oneself as artists, getting agents, and following
your passions despite obstacles. Eric's speech echoed themes of what another
Pittsburgh native Bernie Goldmann said when he spoke at Pitt last year about the
importance of learning the business side of the entertainment industry even as one
develops oneself as an artist.
